This new edition of the English-Bulgarian dictionary is an updated edition of the previous one and for the first time English-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-English are published in one volume. It is hoped that it will be of use to both beginners and intermediate-level students. The selection of vocabulary, both spoken and written, as most frequently used in Britain and the United States of America is based on a frequency list which has been updated. There are about 20 000 entries, about 10 000 for each individual dictionary. To save space, words used in a similar form in English and Bulgarian are not included. Some features of this useful dictionary: 1. The fact that the two dictionaries are contained in one volume means that it can be handled very easily and can even be carried in your pocket. 2. Although this is essentially a dictionary of contemporary spoken English, it also contains a high proportion of words met within literature. 3. American usage has also been taken into consideration and is indicated by (US). 4. In the English-Bulgarian Dictionary, about 10 000 items are given in phonetic transcription, using the accepted International Phonetic Alphabet. 5. The English-Bulgarian part of the dictionary can be of help to English-speaking persons visiting our country, or studying Bulgarian, as stress marks are provided in the Bulgarian words. Not included in the dictionary are derivative forms of words, such as adverbs formed by the addition of the suffix -ly, many of the nouns formed from verbs by the addition of the ending such -ment, -ation, -ness, and others. Also not included are specialist terms, many words from the international lexicon, as well as out-of-date and dialect words. In many cases where the same English word is used both as verb and noun, only the more commonly-used form is given. The principal words in the dictionary are given in alphabetical order. Where there are several meanings of a word, they are separated by a semicolon, whereas synonyms are separated by a comma. Some meanings are given a fuller explanation.
