Since 1971 Tokai University has maintained an agreement for the exchange of cultural and scientific research with the Bulgarian State Committee for Science and Technical Progress and has been enjoying exchanges of students and researchers as well as other cultural, scientific programs. These include the excavation of an archaeological site near Djadovo Village in the Sliven District of Bulgaria. The excavation of this site located in ancient Thrace was originally begun by a Bulgarian party in cooperation with a Dutch party. After dispatching a delegation to Bulgaria in October 1983 for discussions and preparatory investigations, Tokai University decide to participate in this international excavation. The University then organized the Committee for Thracian Excavation under my direction and the Executive Committee for Thracian Excavation under the leadership of professor K. Shoju. The Tokai University Archaeological Party realized its first excavation from July to August of the next year. Then December 1, 1984, Tokai University and Institute of Thracology in Bulgarian Academy exchanged „Memoranda for Organization of a Joint Japanese Bulgarian Archaeological Research Project at the Tell near Djadovo Village, Sliven District of the People`s Republic of Bulgaria”. We have been participating in the excavation every year since. This huge archaeological site contains traces of medieval habitation in the highest layer and reaches back to the Bronge Age in the lower layers. Thus, this excavation will greatly contribute to research on the historical cultures of Southeast Europe and the Aegean Sea region. As this international endeavor is fortunately progressing well, we have reason to hope and believe that it will result in great success through the future cooperation of the three parties fulfilling its particular role. This report on the excavation is the first mark of our cooperation. It covers the research on the medieval layer. There are few contributions from the Tokai University Party in this report because Tokai University began participating in the excavation when it was already approaching the Bronze Age layer. Nevertheless we cooperated actively in the editing through editorial conferences with the Bulgarian Party. These editorial activities are reflected in the photographies and plans and in a supplemental article on the medieval pits. Also, Tokai University Press has taken charge of the publication. It is a great pleasure to be able to publish these first results of our cooperative efforts in this form. I hope that our research will continue and that it will lead to the publication of future reports progress of research in this scientific domain.
