Howard R. Pollio, Ph.D. is Alumni Professor of Psychology (Emeritus) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology, from Brooklyn College, and his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Michigan. His areas of specialization include learning and thinking, college teaching, figurative language, humor, and existential phenomenological approaches to psychology. He has published more than 120 journal articles, book chapters, and books. He has also directed more than 85 doctoral dissertations the majority of which involve qualitative methods. He was founding editor of the journal Metaphor and Symbol. He has been president of the Southeastern Psychological Association and Phi Beta Kappa national lecturer. He is a fellow of two divisions of the American Psychological Association and has received numerous teaching and research awards.
Tolya Stoitsova, PhD, Dr. Sc. is a full Professor in Social Psychology and Media Studies and Director of the Master’s program in International Communication at the New Bulgarian University. She received her Master’s degrees in Psychology and English Philology from Sofia University and her PhD in non-verbal communication as well as her Dr. Sc. in mass media studies from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Psychology. Her fields of specialization include verbal and non - verbal communication, mass communication, and international communication, phenomenological approaches to psychology, media violence, media literacy, media education, and cyber bullying. She has published 5 books and more than 130 journal articles and conference talks. She has directed 7 doctoral dissertations. She won a Fulbright scholarship in advance mass media research in 2008-2009 at California University in Santa Barbara. For 10 years she has been editor in chief of one of the two Bulgarian journals in psychology. She is a fellow of the Bulgarian Psychological Association and of the European Public Relation Education and Research Association, as well as a National Bologna Expert in Higher Education.
Anne Snellen, Ph.D. received her doctorate in English and linguistics from the University of Tennessee. Her bachelor’s degree is from Center College where she majored in both history and English. At the time she was working on the present book, she was a member of the Writing Center at Notre Dame University.
