Preface
The First PATABS Round Table held in Georgia and Turkey in 2006 gave birth to a periodic forum for discussion on the production and trade of ancient transport amphorae in the Black Sea area. The second edition of the conference was held on September 26-30, 2007 at several Bulgarian towns along the southwest Black Sea coast. The present volume presents the papers delivered at this meeting. The twenty two contributions are arranged themati-cally according to the topics of the conference: diffusion and trade; production centres and workshops; typology and chronology. The language of the English and French papers has been improved by Dr. Emil Nankov from the American Research Center in Sofia and by Dr. Nathan Badoud from the French School at Athens.
It is a great pleasure to thank the numerous institutions and individuals who joined their efforts in the organization of the Second PATABS Round Table. In Kiten the meeting was hosted by St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. We would like to extend our gratitude to the Rector of the University, Prof. Ivan Ilchev, for supporting the event and delivering the opening speech. We are much indebted to the Director of the Centre of Underwater Archaeology at Kiten, Ms. Christina Angelova, for her assistance, and her spectacular presentation of the underwater discoveries in Bulgaria. We are also thankful to Mr. Dimitar Nedev, Head of the Sozopol Archaeological Museum, for organizing the visit to Apollonia Pontica.
The host of the Round Table in Nessebar was the Ancient Nessebar Museum; our special gratitude goes to the Director of this institution, Ms. Petya Kiyashkina. In Kabyle the participants were warmly welcomed by the doyen of the Chair of Archaeology of St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia Prof. Lyudmil Getov, who presented the local amphora collection. The event was organised by the Yambol Historical Museum and its Director Dr. Ilia Iliev, to whom we are much indebted.
The final session of the Round Table was held in Sredetz. We deeply appreciate the hospitality of Ms. Krasimira Kostova, Head of the Sredetz Historical Museum.
We are equally in debt to Prof. Yvon Garlan and Prof. Jean-Paul Morel for making the introductory and concluding remarks of the conference. Last, but not least, we express our sincere thanks to the participants for creating an excellent atmosphere at the meeting and delivering their manuscripts on time.
