Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty is the liberal political foundation in Germany. It was established in 1958 by former president Theodor Heuss and his friends in the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and named after Heuss' political mentor Friedrich Naumann. Naumann, who died in 1919, was a liberal leader whose lasting legacy was the introduction of civic education in Germany.Initially focusing on civic education within the country and contributing to the success of the democratic reconstruction in the Federal Republic of Ger many after WW II, the foundation, upon invitation of the federal government, started civic education projects all over the world from the late 1960s as well. Today, Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty is active in some sixty countries, trying to promote liberal democracy and liberal values in close cooperation with local partners and liberal parties.
